PDX Animal Assisted Therapy

Since 2019, PDX has offered an animal-assisted therapy program meant to bring moments of calm, comfort, and connection to travelers, employees, and volunteers throughout our airport.

What began as a canine therapy program has grown to include llamas and alpacas; offering travelers a unique PDX-y experience.

Our Therapy Dogs

Overseen by DoveLewis, the PDX canine therapy program includes more than 30 highly trained canine therapy teams. Dogs who are part of the program are trained to recognize when people may be feeling stressed, so they can offer comfort when it’s needed most.

These very adorable pups are career-change and retired companions from Guide Dogs for the Blind. They are paired with dedicated handlers who volunteer their time to complete extensive training. Together, they help bring a sense of calm to busy airport environments.

Where can I find them at PDX?

The DoveLewis teams often visit PDX during our busiest travel hours. We don’t keep a set schedulefor their visits, but you’re likely to run across their wagging tails during your next travel day.

Our Therapy Llamas and Alpacas

Therapy llamas and alpacas joined the program in 2023, bringing their own brand of joy to PDX. Their visits are made possible through the care and support of Mtn Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that offers this service free-of-charge. Additional visits are often requested and sponsored by the airport and various business partners throughout the year. Each animal is carefully chosen for its temperament and trained to thrive in busy spaces like the airport. These gentle, social animals bring a sense of calm that helps reduce stress, while their quirky personalities spark smiles and curiosity. It’s an experience you won’t find at most places, especially at other airports! But, that’s part of what makes PDX so special.

Where can I find them at PDX?

Therapy llamas and alpacas visit PDX during select times throughout the year. Their appearances are short and sweet, usually 60 to 90 minutes, designed to relieve stress for people who happen upon them.
