Special Needs

Portland International Airport offers services throughout the airport to assist disabled travelers or airport visitors with special needs.

Wheelchair Service or Blind Assists
For wheelchair service or blind assists please contact your airline in advance if you are traveling; otherwise, use any of the white courtesy phones located throughout the terminal to contact an airport operator for assistance from 6 a.m.to 11:30 p.m. Your wheelchair (or blind assist) aid will assist you with your luggage.

Accompanying Passengers to/from the Gate
To accompany a solo traveler with special needs to or from an arrival or departure gate (such as an unaccompanied child or an elderly or disabled passenger), you must obtain a gate pass at the ticket counter of the airline on which the person is flying. Be sure to allow additional time for potential lines at the counter. Please note that only one person may be allowed to accompany the special-needs passenger to or from the gate. Also, please be prepared to provide government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver's license) and/or flight information. Please contact your airline for ticket counter hours or more information.

Parking
Parking for persons with disabilities is located in the parking garage next to the elevators. In the garage, floors 5 and 7 are van accessible with a maximum clearance of 8 feet. Vehicles displaying disabled placards may park in the garage for the same rate as the economy lot, $8.00 per day.

Vehicles displaying disabled parking permits may also park in designated spaces near bus shelters in the long-term and economy lots. Free wheelchair-accessible shuttles are available every 8-10 minutes to and from the terminal building.

Disabled loading and unloading spaces are available at the north and south ends of the upper and lower roadways in front of the terminal. Use of these spaces requires a driver to remain with the vehicle.

Parking Lot Shuttle Buses
The shuttle buses that serve the long-term and economy parking lots feature easy on/off access, as well as a Visual Announcement System for the hearing impaired.

Traveler Assistance
During peak periods, Volunteer Information Persons (VIPs) stand ready throughout the terminal to help passengers. They provide travel assistance, information and directions. VIPs are dressed in blue polo shirts featuring the "ask me" logo.

Rest Rooms
Family rest rooms for persons with physical disabilities are located near Gates A2, C3 and D1.

Service Dog Relief Area
A service dog relief area is located outside baggage claim at the north end of the terminal.

Text Telephones (TTYs)
TTYs for the deaf or hard of hearing can be found on each concourse and throughout the terminal. For general information, dial 1.800.815.4636 (TTY).

Visual Paging
Visual paging is available on concourses C, D and E, as well as Baggage Claim and the central terminal food court.

Areas of Rescue Assistance (ARAs)
In the event of an emergency, ARAs provide mobility-impaired persons means to obtain assistance. ARAs are located at emergency exits on concourses C and D, and near the north end of the airport.
